Understand Linux processes
A process is a running instance of a program. Learn to inspect processes, understand parent/child relationships, and use signals without treating process management as guesswork.
Inspect first
ps ps aux top
ps gives a snapshot, while top presents a live view of resource use. The exact columns differ by platform.
Foreground and background jobs
command & jobs fg
A trailing & starts a command asynchronously in shells that support job control. jobs lists shell jobs and fg brings a job to the foreground.
Signals and safe control
kill -TERM PID ps -p PID
TERM asks a process to terminate cleanly. Prefer a graceful signal and verify the process before acting. Do not blindly copy a PID from an unrelated example.
Important: Process-management commands affect the operating system outside the browser simulator. Use real-system examples only on systems you administer.
